“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Titus 2:11-12 ESV
It’s easy to follow the world. All you have to do is exist. It takes no training or practice to be worldly. Every human on earth is born with this natural not-god-given “talent” for rebellion and disobedience. The human mind is prone to conformity from the very beginning, just as we know that apart from God’s merciful intervention a child will become what they see in their parents.
When you receive the grace of God in salvation you are receiving a trainer for life. Grace will teach you to deny your former ways, your former “talents”, and desire only God. This grace is a person. A person who accomplished something so incredible that it hurts to not bring Him honor in life.
Why must a person in Christ constantly deny ungodliness and worldly passions?
It’s because of who Grace is, and what He determined to accomplish though it. The scriptures say that grace appeared in order to save people, and to teach them something. Grace has every right to be your teacher because grace alone brought your salvation. The Lord Jesus, in whom dwelt the fullness of grace, came to the world to bring life, and in the process kill death. Ungodliness is sin. Worldly passion is sin. They are sin because they oppose God’s truth. They are to be denied and renounced by you because Christ died to destroy them for you.
The person who loves grace will fully embrace what it came to do, to destroy sin and save sinners.
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
It’s true to this very day. His life is our light. Through the sacrifice of the cross His life given to us becomes our guide, our trainer. We are to be daily trained in this grace, conforming to Him. Closeness to Him means distance from the former things. This is what grace teaches us, that God came to destroy the ungodliness of man’s heart through Jesus. What He came to destroy, we are not to love. The very curse He died to lift from His people, we are to renounce every day. Though this generation is wicked indeed, you have a greater teacher, teaching you to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives till He appears once again.
