Praying the Psalms (Psalm 5) (We Pray to You)

Where shall I direct my prayers? Only to you, Lord. Only You understand. You hear and you do right. Not only do you hear my prayers, but even my cries. I groan for relief for this earth, this country and your people. All of creation is groaning today and it’s no different than yesterday. We groan because we all fall short of your glory. We long for glory. Show me your glory.

When your people cry you are attentive to every word. We often don’t know what to pray or how to articulate our thoughts, but you know us still so well. You know the words before they form upon our tongues. You are King and God, so this morning, I pray to you. This morning, I make the cross of Jesus my focus and aim. His sacrifice bears the weight of my sin and the burden that this world longs to be relieved of. So I come and lay it all there.

This morning we are a nation who grieves. Bloodthirsty men have come in and devoured the flesh of innocent people to fulfill their religious zeal. They serve Satan. Their wickedness is more than I can bear. But they will not boast forever. You will destroy them in their lies and with great justice bring them to nothing. You abhor all evil. “You hate all evil doers.”

“For there is no truth in their mouth;
their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
they flatter with their tongue.
Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.” Psalm 5:9-10

Let us mourn and weep with those who need our sympathy. It’s easy to be cold and desensitized in this digital age, and yet, we are the body of Christ. We are a people who should feel as you feel, see as you see and move with the compassion that helps the needy. Let us take refuge in you and lead others to that place. Let it be Christ they see when we speak of hope and joy. Let those who mourn today soon sing for joy, having found that Jesus cares. Jesus weeps. Jesus died to bring everlasting joy in Him. We desire your protection, not so that we may live longer, but so we might exult in you and spread your glory among the nations.We will soon enter a house prepared for us by the blood, sweat and tears of a loving Savior. We will dwell there forever, covered with an eternal shield of love and grace, forever praising and loving your holy name. We will not fear the enemy any longer for he will be destroyed. With one breath he will be extinguished, and with him, all sin, sorrow and suffering will be so more.

Lord, hasten the day!
